Rose Bishop
Rose Bishop serves as Instructor of Flute at Coe College, Cornell College, Kirkwood Community College, and Mount Mercy University. An active orchestral musician, she serves as Principal Flute of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra and Second Flute/Piccolo with the Quincy and Ottumwa Symphony Orchestras and has performed with Orchestra Iowa, the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, among others. A highly sought-after guest artist, Bishop has appeared as a guest soloist with ensembles including the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra and numerous university and municipal bands, in addition to enjoying various guest artist residencies at universities throughout the nation. An active clinician, Bishop has performed, lectured, and presented at events including the Kansas Wesleyan International Music Festival, Upper Midwest Flute Association Festival, Iowa Flute Festival, Wisconsin Flute Festival, Portland Flute Society, the St. Louis Flute Fair, among others. Dedicated to community outreach, Bishop is the founder and Artistic Director of the Eastern Iowa Flute Workshop, the Cornell College Flute and Clarinet Summer Camp, and is a frequent contributor to Flute Talk Magazine and the Flute Examiner. Bishop serves as a member of the National Flute Association’s Career and Artistic Development Committee and is a Trevor James Alto Flute Artist. Alan Theisen
Alan Theisen (b. 4 October 1981) is a composer, saxophonist, author, and educator.
Theisen's compositions encompass a wide array of genres and instrumentation including chamber music, art song, solo piano, concerti, jazz, pop song, musical theatre, symphonies, improvisational music, and more. Praised as coming from “an extraordinarily talented and prolific composer,” his works are frequently commissioned/performed by musicians around the world to audience acclaim. Theisen is a collaborative composer, easily incorporating input from the performers for whom he is writing. Some recent premieres of Theisen's music have occurred at National Sawdust (Brooklyn), New Music Gathering, and the World Saxophone Congress (Strasbourg, France), and the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference.
An active saxophonist, Theisen concertizes in classical recitals, gigs with jazz bands and musical theater productions, directs multiple ensembles, and premieres/records the music of fellow contemporary composers. His acclaimed voice/saxophone avant-pop band, MIATp, combines experimental music, multiple pop genres, and theatre in live performances across the United States.
Theisen is an author whose writings about music and the arts take several forms and cover a variety of subjects. As a music theorist, he specializes in the analysis and pedagogy of post-1900 classical music, presenting award-winning research on these topics at national and regional academic conferences.
An energetic educator, he offers impactful professional development experiences (masterclasses, workshops, and lectures) for students and musically engaged audiences of all experience levels. Theisen was a tenured Associate Professor of Music at Mars Hill University (North Carolina) where he coordinated the music theory/composition curriculum from 2011 to 2021 before he resigned to devote more time to composition and performance. Prior to his decade at Mars Hill University, he was Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Theisen received his Ph.D. in music theory and composition from Florida State University and degrees (B.M. Music History and M.M. Music Theory) from the University of Southern Mississippi.
A native of Michigan, he has spent the majority of his life in the Deep South of the United States. He currently resides in New Orleans and is a full-time Lecturer of Music at Xavier University of Louisiana.
Karen Weirather
Karen Weirather of Hamilton, IL is Principal Flute of the Nauvoo Orchestra, 2nd Flute/Piccolo of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra, and subs with the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestra, and Peoria Symphony Orchestra. As an educator, Karen is currently the Flute Instructor at both Southeastern Community College and Culver-Stockton College. An advocate of the Arts, Karen Weirather is the Founder and Coordinator of Riverbend Flute Festival and started the Future Flutist Youth Scholarship to help young flute players in financial need. In tandem with her musical life, Karen is an AmSAT Certified Teacher of the Alexander Technique. She has completed multiple collegiate residencies and, by invitation, presented her workshop Alexander Technique and Flute at the 2018 National Flute Association Convention. Karen Weirather received her BM from Western Illinois University, an AmSAT Teacher Certification from the Alexander Technique Center of Urbana, and a MM from the University of Missouri.
Daniel Pappas
Composer Daniel C Pappas writes music in varying styles ranging from Orchestral to Chamber, Solo, and Electro-Acoustic. Daniel’s music has been featured on several new music festivals including, IDRS, the BGSU New Music Festival, the annual UNCG New Music Festival, the Cape Fear New Music Festival at Methodist University, and xMUSE at the University of South Carolina. Performances of his works have also taken place at both regional and national College Music Society conferences. Pappas frequently collaborates with orchestras in Germany where he first studied music. Dr. Pappas is the music program coordinator at Southeastern Community College in Burlington, IA. He is also active as a contracted television composer for most all major networks. His music has appeared on shows such as Good Morning America, World News with Diane Sawyer, and 20/20. Pappas holds degrees from Grace College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he studied composition with Mark Engebretson. Daniel completed his doctorate degree in composition at the University of South Carolina, where he studied with John Fitz Rogers and Reginald Bain. Pappas has also had the opportunity to be coached by renowned composers Paul Lanksy, Jacob ter Veldhuis, and Libby Larsen to name a few. His pre college composition teacher is the Schott published German composer Henning Brauel.
Keith Hanlon
Dr. Keith Hanlon earned his DMA from West Virginia University (2017), his MM from Virginia Commonwealth University (2005) and his BA from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1998). Dr. Hanlon has presented lectures, master classes, and performances throughout Europe and the United States and has held faculty positions at several universities where taught courses in applied flute and music theory. Dr. Hanlon served in the United States Army and was the former piccolo and associate principal flute with the 33rd Army Band in Heidelberg, Germany. He was a core member of the Maryland Winds and the Keystone Wind Ensemble and has recorded on the Klavier and Citadel labels. He served as the assistant principal flute with the Richmond Philharmonic, piccolo for the Commonwealth Winds, and flutist for the Virginia Wind Quintet. He has also performed with the Richmond Symphony, Mountainside Baroque (on traverso), University of Iowa Opera Orchestra, the Premier Chamber Orchestra, and the Allegany Symphony. He is currently principal flute with the Ottumwa Symphony and the Derecho Wind Quintet. Dr. Hanlon lives in Coralville, IA where he works for Flute Authority as a Sales Specialist and Flute Technician. He is a founding board member of the Iowa City Flute Choir and former director of the Queen City Flute Choir (MD). Dr. Hanlon continues to serve on the Board of Directors for the Flute Society of Washington, and he is an active member of Delta Omicron professional international music fraternity. He has co-founded The Flute Examiner, an online publication & newsletter about the flute & flute pedagogy. He performs on both modern and historical instruments and co founded the io ensemble, which serves to highlight the flute through the performance of a wide variety of repertoire and the use of historical and modern instruments.
Heather Neuenschwander
Heather Neuenschwander is the piccolo player with the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra and has played flute and piccolo with several other orchestras and bands throughout Iowa and Michigan. She is also the head of Online Sales and Promotions for Flute Specialists, Inc. a flute repair and sales shop based in Clawson, MI. Heather is proud to be the director of the Iowa City Flute Choir, an ensemble she co-founded after moving to the area from Michigan in 2018. Heather teaches flute lessons virtually and at her home studio teaching students from ages 9 to 92. Previously, she taught band, choir, and music appreciation in public, private, and charter schools. Heather has a Master’s Degree in Flute Performance and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. She resides in Coralville with her husband and two sons.
