"With the scholarship, I was able to have a month of free lessons with Karen. Through her, I learned and grew so much as a flutist and continued to go to her for lessons after the month was over. Since winning the Future Flutist Youth Scholarship, I have been to several super conference honor bands and was principal flutist at the St. Ambrose Honor Band. I also won 'I' ratings on my solo at solo/ensemble contest my sophomore year of high school."
Charlotte Aitchison
2019 Winner - Nauvoo, IL
"I applied for the FFYS award by doing an essay and was able to get a newer flute and case with the award. It was a great surprise when Mrs. Weirather came to the school and gave it to me in band class. It was really nice to have a flute that wasn't falling apart every time I played it. Since then, I have been in band at school for the past two years. I even got a perfect score on my solo at Solo and Ensemble Contest! I also continue to play the flute with my younger siblings while they are playing their instruments. The award has been a great start to my musical path."
Ava Miles
2020 Winner - Cedar Rapids, IA
“I have recently completed my sophomore year of high school at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Since I received the scholarship, I was able to fully purchase a new flute. I used that instrument to audition for Iowa All-State last fall, and I was accepted into the band! Although there was no in-person performance, I was still ecstatic for the honor to be considered an All-Stater. I truly believe purchasing a new instrument took my tone quality and playing to the next level, and I couldn’t have done it without the assistance of the Future Flutist Youth Scholarship. Thank you!”
Noelle Schnoebelen
2022 Winner - Iowa City, IA
"The scholarship helped my family and I to finish paying off my new flute, which has really helped me to improve in my technique. I was also able to purchase some flute books that I really needed. Last year I started a flute choir at my high school, and I really needed pieces for us to play that were not long or boring. Luckily, with the help of the scholarship money, I bought some fun flute choir pieces!"
Evelyn Munson
2023 Winner - Hamilton, IL
"The scholarship has helped me so much. It helped me pay for a new flute, lessons, and camps. This has let me expand my knowledge and love for music and helped me join the Quincy Youth Orchestra as a 7th grader! I can't wait to attend the Flute Festival again and be with people who love flute as much as I do! Thank you so much!"

Band Director - West Liberty High School
"I think every band director's dream is that each of their students, regardless of socioeconomic status, can have equal access to quality materials needed to achieve the best music education possible, and the Future Flutist Youth Scholarship help makes that dream come true. One of our most passionate, promising young high school flutists was able to step up from a broken beginning-band instrument to a quality, open-hole intermediate model, allowing her to finally play with the beautiful tone and technical dexterity she'd been working on for years. She has since gone on to earn numerous Division I Superior ratings at Solo/Small-Ensemble Festival, first-chair at regional honor bands, and principal flute/section leader in our own band program. Next year she will be pursuing a science degree at a four-year university, but plans to continue her journey as a lifelong musician by playing in the University ensembles. As a band director, I am incredibly grateful for the success she has achieved, thanks for the FFYS program. I cannot say enough good things about Karen Weirather and the growing flute programs she has built!"
"There is a flute student of Karen Weirather's in my band who is now in the 7th grade, a passionate, hard-working, wildly talented player. It has been my privilege to see her grow in enthusiasm and skill since she came to me as a beginner, an thanks to the Future Flutist Youth Scholarship she now has a high-quality instrument that can keep pace with her burgeoning abilities. She has gone on to be selected to ILMEA All-Region band and the Quincy Area Youth Orchestra, earned multiple Division 1 ratings at IESA Solo and Ensemble contest, and has been chosen not once but twice as Best of Day as a woodwind soloist. The sky is truly the limit for this young flutist, and the FFYS program has been instrumental in giving her the resources she needs to flourish."
